Private Yoga Classes in South London

Traditionally yoga was taught in India on a one-to-one basis, in order to address the specific needs of a particular person.  I offer the opportunity to have individual yoga classes in your own home, taking into account any health issues, a need to increase or improve flexibility generally or specifically, or any other particular areas you may want to focus on.

A private 1-2-1 yoga class gives you the chance to learn at your own pace, proceeding as quickly or as slowly as you wish.  It is also ideal for those who have never done yoga before and those who may be slightly daunted at the thought of joining a group class - an individual yoga class gives you the chance to become familiar with some of the practices and postures, and to build up your confidence and flexibility so that you can, if you wish, go on to attend a group class in the future.  In a private class, there is ample opportunity to ask questions and to get feedback on your progress.

Please contact me on 0208 653 6374 for more details or to book a session. Prices start from £40.00 per hour, or longer periods pro rata. If you would like to share the lesson with a friend or colleague, prices start from £25.00 per hour per person.  Please note that a minimum of 24 hours notice is required in case of cancellation of any booked lessons, otherwise 50% of the fee will be due.

What to expect from a private class
I will come to your home at a mutually agreed time, and you will need to provide a suitable space where you have enough room to move and stretch out.  I can bring a yoga mat for you to use in the class, although you may want to buy your own; I will also bring other props that will enable you to be comfortable and safe in your practice.  Make sure you are wearing comfortable clothing – a T-shirt and tracksuit trousers or leggings are ideal - plus you may want an extra layer or two to put on during the final period of relaxation.

A typical hour long yoga class will begin with some warm up exercises, sometimes preceded by a short relaxation with some breathing practice, followed by a variety of postures (asanas), and a final relaxation at the end of the lesson.  If required, a short meditation practice can also be included. I will fully explain and demonstrate all the practices, and assist and adjust your practice of the postures as necessary.  I will provide you with a summary of the postures that we cover in each 1-2-1 class so that as you gain familiarity with them, you can maintain your practice in-between your taught lessons.  Regular practice will obviously bring benefits more quickly.

Each yoga lesson will build on the previous one: postures and practices already learned can be repeated (with variations) to fully integrate your learning experience, while new postures can be introduced gradually for a more rounded, varied practice and to maintain your interest.

How to prepare for your lesson

Make sure that you will not be disturbed or distracted - either unplug your telephone or switch on the answerphone.  Lay out your mat in a quiet room, ideally with plenty of space if that is possible.  You may like to have a blanket nearby to keep you warm during the final relaxation period.  You should not eat too close to the start of the class otherwise you may feel uncomfortable in certain positions: aim to leave at least 1½-2 hours after a light snack/breakfast, or 3-4 hours after a larger meal.
